Many people wonder why drinking becomes such a problem, and why alcohol is classified as a drug. The truth is that alcohol actually has plenty of components that make it effectively a poison to the body. Thus, long term drinking can cause negative side effects that are threatening to your life and the overall ability of your body to continue to function which is why alcoholics also have a high morbidity rate as if the chronic condition is not stopped.
Every ounce of alcohol that is consumed is hazardous to the body and creates temporary damage to the kidneys, liver, brain, pancreas, and the central nervous system. Most people do not feel the effects of the damage because after a few drinks they abstain from drinking for a large portion of time. However, alcoholics continue to damage these vital organs on a daily basis multiple times a day which is why they are at risk for several different diseases and organ failure. Although alcohol will not instantly kill you in most cases, it will increase your risk for cancer and kill if you consume it in large amounts over a period of time regularly.
The liver is the primary affected organ since it is the livers job to digest the alcohol so that it damages other organs less. However, you cannot live without the liver thus over time you develop the chance of developing many diseases that strike the liver disabling it such as fatty liver and cirrhosis. Both are diseases that may require you to be on dialysis for a lengthy period of time if damage gets to extensive.
Additionally, drinking leads to cytotoxia which means cell death within the kidney, throat, colon, and stomach which increases the chance that you will develop cancer. In fact, alcohol is so strong that it is able to penetrate through the barrier in your brain and the stomach lining so that it can cause havoc on the tissues of the body. The only way to reverse this damage is to quit before it becomes widespread at which point recovery is not always a guarantee.
