Alcoholism affects everyone around you

If you think that you are the only one who is dealing with alcoholism then you are mistaken. Along with you, your entire family and friends too are dragged into the destructive effect that alcoholism can bring about for one and all.

Alcohol affects all parts of the alcoholic’s body and mind and severely affects their ability to function at optimum and normal levels. The alcoholic has to realize that it is a problem and only then will they be able to seek professional assistance to help them deal with it. It not only affects the person physically but psychologically and emotionally too. There are several ways that alcoholism can gnaw away at the family structure and the dynamics of social standing.

Alcoholics are known to be in self-denial and what starts out as social drinking and a peg or two to relax after a hard day’s work results in being not able to function without the bottle. The domestic partners of alcoholics are emotionally abused and have to bear with physical assault too. They do try to help and gain help for their spouse, but the lies and deception that is woven by the alcoholic surpass this.

Both of them become social recluses as they are worried to go to social gathering because of the snickers and how the alcoholic will behave in front of others. This makes them all the more secluded and withdrawn. The partner might need to work double shifts to be able to meet the living expenses and keep the home fires burning. This lays further stress not only on the relationship but the family too. The children are witnessing to an adult, whom they love dearly, falling prey to substance abuse. This is certainly not the best of role models for them.

Research has proven that children who come from alcohol abusive homes are more likely to be social misfits and have a number of self-destructive problems later on in life. This could result in highly dangerous activities on their part in order to draw attention to themselves and gain the love and acceptance that were missing in their childhood. These children aren’t able to develop trust and relationships with others throughout their adulthood.

Furthermore, when a child sees an adult drink themselves to the ground, they themselves reach for alcohol as a crutch. They make themselves believe that what is good for the parent is good for them too.
