Alcoholism is an addiction to alcoholic beverages. It is a strong desire that grows from a craving and eventually ends with a physical dependency to this substance. Individuals who become addicted experience a “loss of control”, lead to a compulsion to repeat their acts of drinking in an excessive manner. The more an individual drinks, the more he/she feels the need for this harmful substance. This means that his/her tolerance level is increased, and more of the alcohol substance is required to fulfill one’s needs.

The Canadian government is   engaging in a “war on alcohol”. It feels that when its citizens   experience alcohol abuse problems, they will not be productive links to society; so the many agencies support groups, as well as treatment centers that Canada offers help with these addiction problems.  A lot of national money is spent to educate individuals early on in life, as to the negative effects that alcohol consumption can have on an individual.  These preventive measures are the best way to control the spread of alcoholism; however for those persons who are already infected, ways to cure alcohol abuse are the only recourses. Canada is covering all of these bases in regard to both the prevention and the treatment pertaining to alcohol abuse.

The Canadian government is setting more limits with the selling of alcohol. Age restrictions are being tightened to prohibit sales to persons underage. More emphasis is being placed on one’s responsibility while drinking. In other words, individuals are being encouraged to take responsibility and not drive while drinking, as well as encouraging their friends not to drive while drinking.  Endangerment to oneself, as well as to others must be eliminated   while drinking any type of alcoholic beverages.

Of course the best way of prohibiting alcoholism is through abstinence, however if this is not possible, then the next best thing is to drink in a responsible fashion. One should also remember that drinking on a regular basis can very often lead to an alcohol addiction problem. So, Canada is trying to teach its citizens that it is best to not drink excessively or frequently!
