Binge Drinking

Binge drinking can be defined as quickly consuming large amounts of alcohol (more than 4 drinks for a woman and more than 5 drinks for a man) in order to become heavily intoxicated in a short amount of time. It is something that has been a fad for college students for generations and it is also, sadly, something that preteens and adults do that simply stems from a need for the alcohol and intoxication.

Interestingly, British researchers have found that there are nine types of binge drinkers.

  • De-stress drinkers drink to relax
  • Community drinkers need to belong and be a part of a group
  • Re-bonding drinkers have a need to stay close to those people who are important to them
  • Depressed drinkers crave comfort and security
  • Conformist drinkers have a need to fit in and belong
  • Boredom drinkers just need something to do
  • Hedonistic drinkers want to stand out from the crowd
  • Macho drinkers also like to stand out from the crowd and spend most of their time in bars or pubs
  • Border dependents visit the bar morning, noon and night. It is like a second home to them.

At the very least, even among binge drinkers younger than 25, drinking affects their memory and attention. Binge drinking has been proven to do more damage overall than drinking over a longer period of time. People have heard the saying time and time again, to the point where it rarely registers, but, alcohol kills brain cells. Those who binge drink more than once a week is really flirting with danger (and alcoholism). While youngsters think it is little more than a good time, the body is building up tolerances to the alcohol which will affect the individual for years.

Binge drinking has become so prevalent in society that for years there have even been board games based on the activity of drinking. They are party games, so of course, the object is to have fun. The problem is that the human body is affected by alcohol in the long run in very negative ways. Especially by those who already have alcoholism in the family.

Binge drinking may seem fun, short term. It feels fun, it feels pleasant until it makes you physically ill, and everyone has a good time. The reality of it is that many of the people who are binge drinking today will be having to go through rehab at some point in the future.
