Children Growing up with Alcoholic Parents – Sure Signs to Look out For

Numerous children worldwide have parents who are abusing alcohol.  It is said that when children grow up in a household where alcohol is abused that they can develop serious issues, which will stay with them possibly for the rest of their lives.

Many issues can arise from children being exposed to alcohol-dependent parents.  Anxiety, lack of social skills and depression are only a few of the issues that can affect children in these situations.  Children who are exposed to alcohol whether directly or indirectly tend to feel similar traits.  These traits are the feeling of isolation and most children who live in alcohol dependent homes do not bring their friends to their homes due to the embarrassment they feel with the situation.

There are true signs, which can relay to caregivers and adults that children are victims of alcohol dependent parents.  Look for children who withdraw from other children and adults, this is a sure sign that minimally something is wrong and as caring adults and someone who intermingles with these children on a daily basis should talk with the child in a loving and caring manner.

These children need to be told that their parent’s condition is not their fault.  These children are sometimes experiencing feelings of guilt while blaming themselves for the actions of their parents.  Another sure sign of trouble is if a child is habitually late for school or failing in school.

Children who suffer from alcohol dependent parents need to have avenues where they can talk to someone outside of their sad situation at home.  These children need to understand wholeheartedly that they are not to blame for the condition of their parents.

Adults should always be aware of the signs of symptoms of a child with alcoholic dependent parents.  Children who suffer from home lives such as this need to have someone to run to and somewhere, which they feel safe.  They should be encouraged to talk and relieve their stress.  There are numerous resources, which can aid children and adults with this particular situation.
