Due to the fact that alcoholism is often found in similar people who share personality traits it is also commonly found in conditions and diseases that share mental traits as well. There is a high occurrence rate of several conditions that also affect the psychological side of the brain in alcoholics that deserve to be studied along with alcoholism. Oftentimes the conditions occur for the same reasons and become meshed in a person’s mind which is why alcoholism cannot be successfully treated on its own since the other unhealthy problems are still in existence.
For example, oftentimes those who would be diagnosed as medically depressed become alcoholics. This is due to the fact that they have a chemical imbalance in their brain or inability to correctly face their emotions. Alcohol provides a way out for people who are depressed since it temporally creates a high in the brain that relieves the depression momentarily. The problem however is that as a person grows a larger tolerance level for the powerful drug they require more alcohol to reach the high which is when binge drinking and drinking on a regular basis begins until a person is no longer able to reach the high but is unable to stop themself.
Another condition that is commonly found in alcoholics is anorexia and bulimia although in this case the alcoholism is usually considered a symptom of the mental disorder. Eating disorders usually stem from a mixture of lack of control and lack of self-confidence which are also prime characteristic traits shared by many alcoholics. Thus, when the person with an eating disorder is introduced to alcohol they are unable to distinguish its harm to their body since their own sense of self value is already distorted. Due to the many imbalances an eating disorder can cause when mixed with an eating disorder alcoholism is considered a very dangerous condition.
These are just a few of the most common conditions that exist in people who suffer from alcoholism. However, the similarities of any disease is usually a feeling of inadequacy in some way which makes it very common for alcoholics to become afflicted with other problems and other conditions that threaten their lives in a greater way.
