Are you an enabler?

If you know someone that has a problem with alcohol addiction, then you need to be aware of the fact that you might be an enabler. Often times in life people tend to want to stay neutral if they know someone that has a problem with drugs or alcohol. By keeping their secret, you are enabling them to drink. There are a lot of reasons that you might want to keep quite, but there are also a lot of reasons why you should not continue down that road. If you are in this horrible position, there are a few things that you can do to get out of it. The sooner that you stop the better it will be for all of the parties that are involved.

When you agree to keep someone’s addiction private, you are allowing them to continue on the path of destruction. You need to know that alcoholics drink because, they have a disease. People that are suffering from it have to get help to deal with their problem. No matter how much they beg you to keep quite, you have to be strong. Tough love is the best course of action for you to take.

Stand up and take responsibility, because they are not able to. There are several different organizations that you can turn to for help. If you are not comfortable with turning to a family member or friend with the information, then you can call a hotline and speak to a professional. They can help you to understand what to do next. One of the best pieces of advice that I can give you, is that you have to be strong, and get them the help that they truly need.

If you are waiting for a miracle, then you are really just fooling yourself. They are not going to stop on their own without help. You have to make a personal choice. Do you take a hard stand, or do continue to let them self destruct in silence. It is going to be much easier to speak up, than it is going to be for you to know that you set back and let it get worse.
