Most adults have been in a situation where they have a friend who has had too much to drink. People who are drinking have impaired judgment and they also can be argumentative. The first thing to remember is never to get into a car when the driver has been drinking. No matter how much they say that they are “okay”, do not get into a car with them. Most people injured and killed in accidents caused by drinking and driving are the passengers. Second to the passengers, the occupants of the other car are injured and killed most often.
If the friend has been drinking and you are not riding with them, consider taking away their keys and calling a taxi for them. People may not want to start an argument, but it is better to take the keys away from a friend than have to attend their funeral. Besides, chances are they will not even remember the next day. But, they will be safe and sober when they wake. If need be, take the keys without them knowing you took them. They will simply think they lost them. Anything is better than letting them get behind the wheel of a car.
There may also be friends or family who may be able to pick up the person who has been drinking. There are so many alternatives to letting them drive drunk. In 2008, there were an estimated 149,028 injuries resulting from drinking and driving. It’s real, and it kills and injures more and more people every year. If they are too drunk to realize that they should not be drinking, it falls to friends and family to decide for them. Perhaps it should not be that way, but it is.
Never engage the person in a verbal battle. It is futile.
People who have been drinking cannot be reasoned with. You may realize they have had too much to drink, but they won’t. Taking their keys and calling a taxi, or driving them home if you have not been drinking is the safest way to go. It’s easy enough to distract someone who has been drinking long enough to take their keys. It is best to do that then to try to argue with them.
Drinking and driving is a serious problem which results in far too many people burying their loved ones or visiting them in the hospital. Keep the roads a little safer by grabbing the keys and calling a taxi.
